Material Editor

Material Editor

Material editor is available from Current Object > Material menu command. It allows changing reflective properties of the surface. (See also Materials.). Note that the object is drawn with these properties when it is not current. Normally current object is drawn in 3D Debugger with selection color.

When Material Editor is up the current object is temporarily drawn in 3D View using the material properties, which are being edited. Occasionally the current object can be redrawn using selection color. In this case Update 3D menu option will show the material again.

Components of the material color can be either modified with sliders or using Color Dialog available on "Select directly" button click.

There is a simplified shortcut for changing color of the object's material, which is available on Color page of Options dialog (Current Object > Options menu command). Surface Color controls on the page allow setting ambient and diffuse colors to the same color, which in many situation gives satisfactory result.

Selection Color controls on the same page allow setting color of the object displayed when it is current.

Texture sub menu of the editor allow loading or deleting texture assigned to the current object. To be displayed on the surface "Use loaded texture" check box must be on. To assign textures (possibly different ones) selectively for a specific surface, use Surface submenu.

Materials Catalogue

Material properties can be stored in Materials Catalogue and reused in different sections or different models.

Materials Catalogue is available from menu of the Materials Editor. It is possible to:

  • Select existing material from the catalogue
  • Add current material to the catalogue
  • Save selected and modified material

With Catalogue dialog open you can also manage folders in materials library. You can:

  • Create new folder (New Folder button)
  • Delete material or folder - select and Delete key
  • Rename material or folder - select the node and click on the label. The label will become editable after a moment of delay

Contents of the materials catalogue is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DInsight\DIStudio\<version>\Catalogue.xml file using simple textual format. Make backup and preserve its format if you need to edit it directly.
